Tips for Preventing Falls

Many older adults are concerned about falling. Falling can cause serious injuries, especially in older people who may have weak bones. The injuries caused by falling may take longer to heal than they would a younger person.

Many falls are related to poor eyesight or household hazards, such as loose rugs, slippery sidewalks, poorly placed electrical cords, and dark stairways. Falls may also be caused by health problems or medications that may make you dizzy, sleepy or unsteady on your feet. Any fall that was caused by dizziness, a seizure, or loss of consciousness needs to be evaluated by a doctor.

TIPS FOR PREVENTING FALLS:

O Exercise regularly to keep your muscles and bones strong and flexible. This may help you recover faster from a fall.

O Have your hearing and eyesight tested regularly. Inner ear problems can affect your balance. Vision problems make it difficult for you to see potential hazards.

O See your Doctor or Pharmacist to find out whether any of the medications you take have side effects like drowsiness or dizziness. Take medications only as directed.

O Limit your alcohol intake.

O Turn on lights when you walk through the house at night. Use night lights in the bedroom, bathroom, and hallways.

O Install light switches at both ends of the stairs and halls. Install handrails on both sides of the stairs.

O Add grab bars in the shower, tub and toilet areas. Use nonslip adhesive strips or a mat in the shower or tub. Consider sitting on a bench or stool in the shower.

O Consider using an elevated toilet seat.

O Where nonslip, low-heeled shoes or slippers that fit snugly.

O Keep telephone and electrical cords out if pathways.

O Tack down rugs and glue down vinyl flooring so they lay flat.

O Purchase a step stool with high and sturdy handrails. Do not stand on a chair to reach for things.

O Use a bright color to paint the edges of outdoor steps and any steps that are especially narrow or are higher or lower than the rest.
